The rock band Stuðmenn came into being in a grammar school in Reykjavik. Their first LP, released in 1975, was an immediate success. In 1982 they appeared in the feature film On Top, a rock musical which is the greatest box-office hit ever in Iceland and is still occasionally shown in Icelandic cinemas and transmitted almost every year on Icelandic State TV. Two more films were to follow and a number of LPs. Stuðmenn still perform as a band and aim to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their first LP in the autumn of 2025.
